When we were taught math, many of us were introduced to the acronym “PEMDAS” to help us remember the order of operations for simplifying math expressions. Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction – following this sequence is crucial for arriving at the correct answer. We have approached our use of AI here at CSA Education with our own established “order of operations” to consistently achieve our project goals.
From the initial brainstorming session to the final polish, AI output is neither the first nor the last step in our process. We recognize that while AI offers incredible capabilities for efficiency and innovation, it serves us best as a powerful tool within a carefully constructed workflow, not a standalone solution.
“PEMDAS” for AI

While not as rigid as the mathematical order of operations, our framework ensures that AI enhances, rather than replaces, the essential human element that defines our work. So, what does “PEMDAS” for AI look like in action?
Preparation/Prompting: Before any AI tool is engaged, our subject matter experts and project leads clearly define the objective, scope, and specific requirements of the task. We make sure our clients’ IP is protected and that we are following all client policies regarding the use of AI. Crafting precise and detailed prompts is paramount, as the quality of the input directly dictates the relevance and usefulness of the AI’s output. This initial human foresight prevents a lot of rework down the line.
Execution by AI: This is where the magic of computational power comes into play. Whether it’s generating initial drafts, analyzing large datasets, or suggesting creative solutions, the AI tool efficiently processes the information according to our well-crafted prompts.
Modification: This is perhaps the most crucial stage, where our human experts carefully review, refine, and adapt the AI-generated content. This isn’t just about catching errors; it’s about infusing the material with nuance, pedagogical expertise, and a unique voice. This step ensures accuracy, relevance, and alignment with our high standards and to our clients’ guidelines and project expectations.
Deeper Development: The AI’s output, now refined, serves as a strong foundation upon which further development occurs. This might involve integrating it with existing content, expanding on key concepts, or conducting further research, often utilizing traditional methods alongside AI. This stage focuses on building out the product comprehensively.
Approval: Every project undergoes rigorous quality assurance and expert review to ensure it meets all objectives and adheres to our stringent quality benchmarks. Only after human approval is any material ready for the next step.
Sharing: When content has gone through a human quality assurance review, it is ready to be shared with clients and end-users.
Working Smarter

CSA has indeed adopted an AI-informed mindset, but this isn’t a carte blanche for unchecked automation. Instead, it means we proactively seek opportunities where AI can augment our capabilities, accelerate tedious tasks, and unearth insights that might otherwise be missed. This commitment to an AI-informed approach, coupled with our specifically developed order of operations, ensures that we enrich our products with the invaluable human element.
We prioritize a collaborative approach to AI usage. If your organization has specific AI policies, we will gladly adhere to them. In the absence of your own guidelines, we’ll apply our internal human-centered AI policy that calls for human review to ensure accuracy, pedagogical soundness, and alignment with project criteria and the high standards you expect from CSA Education.
This iterative process, guided by our “PEMDAS for AI,” is what keeps the collaboration at CSA — with our vendors and clients — consistently delivering both quality and quantity in an increasingly AI-driven world. It’s how we harness the power of AI without losing sight of the essential human touch that makes our work truly impactful.
